Amboseli Youth Learn About Conservation

Conservation Education Officer, Losioki Somoire, shares his passion for teaching the young people of Amboseli…and learning alongside them! Mr. Somoire started the year off working with 1354 students from eight schools: Kimana Girls & Primary, Rombo Girls, Olchorro Primary & Secondary, Ilmisigiyio Primary, Ilmurtot Primary, and Esiteti Primary.

With schools closing due to the pandemic, Mr. Somoire adapted by bringing small groups of students safely out into the field to connect with nature—taking guided walks, birdwatching at Rombo Conservancy, watching nature films including Elephant Queen, creating art showcasing the students’ favorite wildlife species, and discussing sustainable methods of community-based conservation. These conservation education activities are supported by the CONNEKT Project and funded by the European Union.

These field lessons are bearing fruit as 137 children overall have joined in (40 girls & 97 boys), eager for the opportunity to learn in their own “backyard” and discover the vital roles wildlife plays in Amboseli’s ecosystem and in turn, their community.
